One of the biggest surprises when Disney announced the first new Star Wars sequel, after they purchased Lucasfilm from George Lucas was that the film would come out in 2015. Many fans were hoping that it would keep the May release dates that the previous films had. Unfortunately, due to production schedules, it was announced that the film would come out in December of 2015. However, that will change with Episode VIII.
While no one else, that I have seen, has picked up on it but it seems that Disney will make sure the second-sequel of the new trilogy will be released in May 2017, just in time for the original film’s 40th anniversary.
During a Disney shareholder’s meeting on Thursday, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars Episode VIII will make it to theaters on May 26th, 2017. Just in time for the Memorial Day weekend. This will definitely change the landscape of movies that will be coming out in the surrounding weeks.
Rian Johnson will be directing the film, whose plot is still under wraps. Not only that but we know the title of the first in the spin-off films will be Star Wars: Rogue One. Now, the internet will explode into countless theories and rationalizations until more is released.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrives in theaters on December 18th, 2015.
