Marvel Cancelling 33 Titles For Secret Wars

With Secret Wars on the verge of beginning and the current “Time Runs Out” storyline on the cusp of ending, it seems that some series will end when the new Secret Wars event begins. It seems 33 of Marvel’s biggest issues will be coming to an end in May as the new series begins.

Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing David Gabriel spoke to Comicbook about the absence of 33 issues in the June solicitations.

“It means that there will be a ‘616 finale!’ and that means exactly what many fans have suspected – everything ends,” Gabriel explains. “We’ve been saying it over and over again but at the core, Battleworld IS the Marvel Universe when Secret Wars #1 hits in May. But before that, there will be a number of titles reaching, what we’re calling, a ‘616 finale,’ ending those stories and characters as you knew them – for now!”

We already knew that Fantastic Four, New Avengers, Avengers, All-New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men would already be ending but many of the comics are coming to a close, when some just started.

All-New Captain America
All-New Ghost Rider
All-New X-Men
Amazing Spider-Man
Amazing X-Men
Angela: Asgard’s Assassin
Avengers, Avengers World
Captain Marvel
Fantastic Four
Guardians 3000
Guardians of the Galaxy
Iron Fist: The Living Weapon
Legendary Star-Lord
Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man
New Avengers
Rocket Raccoon
Secret Avengers
Spider-Man & the X-Men
Spider-Man 2099
Superior Iron Man
Uncanny X-Men

“Now in a perfect world, we’d have stopped every book with its April issue, putting out a nice clean May Previews catalog. Everyone would have seen upfront all those titles that had their finale, and all those titles that were starting fresh. But things don’t always go so easily,” says Gabriel. “Instead we gave our creators the option to end their stories the way they wanted to; we let them tell ‘Last Days’ stories if they wanted to; we let them tell Secret Wars stories if they wanted to. So in the end Secret Wars truly has been a creative driven process.”

Some recently launched titles like Howard The Duck, Spider-Gwen and All-New Hawkeye will be continuing through the event but there is some word that their stories could be affected at some point. So it seems that Marvel is revamping their 616 universe and giving people a clean jumping off point come the end of summer.

While it will not be a drastic as the DC Comics reboot of their universe, it seems that they will be merging their Ultimates and 616 Universe into one cohesive universe that people can start off reading. Most likely to bring readership up and reflect a bit more of the movies that represent those comics.
