Marvel Had Back-Up Plan If Spidey Deal Went South

When rumors began surfacing that Marvel was looking to get Spider-Man back into their fold, it seemed as if Sony decided to double-down on the webslinger franchise. Marvel had a plan all along. Rumors were swirling through the internet but many people (like us) never thought it would happen. Marvel had a plan to try and get him back but just in case…

In an interview with /Film, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Fiege was working on a plan to get Spider-Man for the phase three of the cinematic universe. However, it was never a done deal as reports late last year indicated. Even during the email leaks of Sony Pictures, no one really knew this was a “thing” until the emails indicated that it was a “no-go” from Sony.

As much as they wanted him to be a part of it, they had to plan for an alternative for the upcoming Civil War and potential Avengers follow-up movies.

“As you might have imagined, that had been in the works for a long, long, long, long time. And we had, as we often do, mapped out various alternatives if things don’t happen. So we had a plan how it would continue without him and we have a plan how now it will continue with him. I wouldn’t say it was “drastic” but we were certainly happy when it all came together.”

I think Marvel has proven their track record that they would have made it work whether they had Spider-Man or not. However, for all parties involved, I think the best outcome is being experienced by all. Sony’s mind seemed to change quick but that could have been the outpouring from fans that wanted to see the character back with Marvel. In essence, people will see Spider-Man if Marvel did it and that meant money for Sony. Smart move on everyone’s part.
