Many may not know this but Atari used to have a series of comic books back in the 1980’s. If you haven’t already guess these books were based on the company’s various video game properties such as Asteroids, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Missile Command, Tempest and Yar’s Revenge. Fast forward to 2015 and new is breaking that Atari and Dynamite Entertainment are teaming up to bring these comics back to print.
Dynamite is committed to reprinting the old comics as well as bringing an all new printing of DC Comics’ Atari Force which ran for 20 issues between 1984 to 1986. The original series had a lot of talent involved such as Gerry Conway, Ross Andru, Roy Thomas, Dick Giordano, Mike DeCarlo, Mike Baron, Eduardo Barreto and Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez.
“We are excited to be teaming up with Dynamite Entertainment to bring a modern twist to a classic series of comics and table top books that are rich with historic art,” said Atari CEO Fred Chesnais in a statement. “Atari’s roots in the comic book world and iconic art is a collector and video game enthusiast’s dream. Our partnership is a fun way to expose our brand to a new generation and resonate with our long-time fans.”
Dynamite also plans a “comprehensive retrospective hardcover book” following Atari’s history. The book will include details of game production and concept art, photos, and tons of behind the scenes info about the 40+ year history of the Atari Company.
