One of the biggest surprises when the casting news of Ben Affleck coming onboard Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as Batman and nearly brought down the internet. Since then, they tide has turned from abject hatred of the idea to a more hopeful curiosity for this performance as the caped crusader. However, the casting was surprising for many observers of the Hollywood scene.
Affleck himself is a creator of movies now, with several directing nods to his credit and Argo for Warner Bros., it seems that he could be directing the next Caped Crusader installment if Deadline is right about their report. The site is reporting that Affleck will direct the next Batman solo film and will co-write the movie with DC Entertainment head Geoff Johns.
“My studio sources tell me that Affleck and Johns are well in synch and have more than found their rhythm,” says Deadline’s Mike Fleming. “In fact, they are likely to turn in a script before the end of the summer, prior to Affleck going off to direct Live By Night in November. Affleck postponed that pic to star in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.”
When the DC Cinematic Universe was announced missing from the line-up was another solo Superman movie, as well as a Batman movie. Sources, shortly after the casting announcement, had said that Affleck would not come onboard to such a franchise project without directing it, especially if it starred himself. Other notables claimed he would not act in a movie that he did not direct, in some recent fare we know that not to be true.
Johns writing the new Batman movie seems weird, especially since Scott Snyder is currently writing one of the best Batman titles in a long time. Perhaps Johns will borrow or have Snyder consult on what they could do with the caped crusader to break the Christopher Nolan mold. We do not like to report on rumor but this has all the ear-markings of truth, especially since it is not being broken by Latino Review.
