Nintendo has decided to shut down the TVii service on the Wii U in North America as of August 11th. Nintendo says an upcoming system update will get rid of the icon on the Wii U menu as well as the GamePad home screen.
Nintendo has released a short statement as to why they have decided to cut the cord on their TV-centric application: “Every service has a life cycle, and it is time to focus our resources on other projects.” Nintendo noted other 3rd party video services are available for the Wii U such as Netflix and Amazon Video. Nintendo does not plan to replace TVii with a similar service.
TVii debuted in 2012 and has always been a service that didn’t get all that much attention. The service was not launched in Europe however due to localization issues.
