Nintendo has always been pretty closed minded about bringing their characters to a movie screen. While they tried long ago with Super Mario Bros. it just didn’t end well for them. However with video game and comic book characters being taken more seriously in cinema these days it’s worth wondering if Nintendo could pull it off.
Game designer (or gaming god if you prefer) Shigeru Miyamoto told Fortune that Nintendo has been approached many times in the past to make a film based on one of their characters. “We’ve had, over the years, a number of people who have come to us and said ‘Why don’t we make a movie together—or we make a movie and you make a game and we’ll release them at the same time?'” Miyamoto said. “I’ve always felt video games, being an interactive medium, and movies, being a passive medium, mean the two are quite different.”
Mr. Miyamoto makes a great point here however times are changing and Nintendo may being switching up their ideas on movies. “As we look more broadly at what is Nintendo’s role as an entertainment company, we’re starting to think more and more about how movies can fit in with that-and we’ll potentially be looking at thing like movies in the future.”
Nintendo is sitting on what is arguably the greatest and most recognizable group of characters in video game history. Of course, some of these stories lend themselves to film a bit better than others however with current comic book movies doing so well Nintendo could really pull off a great film.
