Legendary director Steven Spielberg has a few things to say about the current Superhero movie trend. Comparing comic book films to the Western films of yesteryear, Spielberg predicts they will fall to a similar fate.
Spielberg sat down with AP recently and commented on the recent boom of Superhero films and their possible cool down.
“We were around when the Western died and there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western. It doesn’t mean there won’t be another occasion where the Western comes back and the superhero movie someday returns,” said Spielberg.
He continued, “Of course, right now the superhero movie is alive and thriving. I’m only saying that these cycles have a finite time in popular culture. There will come a day when the mythological stories are supplanted by some other genre that possibly some young filmmaker is just thinking about discovering for all of us.”
Of course what he’s saying is true however I feel the comparison isn’t perfect. While Westerns died down just as superhero films will as well there was a huge reason western films lost popularity. The Space Race and general technological advancements caused most people to be more interested in sci-fi which most comic book movies have in spades. Time will only tell when superhero films will die down and what will eventually take their place in the theaters.
