Justice League 3001 is set to release its first issue in January 2016 and Newsarama is reporting it will feature an all-female cast. This will be established heroes in the DC universe that will work alongside newer versions as well.
“It’s not because I decided I wanted to write all females,” said series co-creator Keith Giffen. “It’s not there to say, ‘Oh look, we’ve got an all-female team!’ Who cares? It’s just the way it shook out.” He added, “Some of the characters just seemed more interesting or more appropriate for the kind of stories we’re trying to tell.”
One confirmed character is Supergirl (naturally) and she seems to be leading the group much like her cousin does with the original Justice League.
“They’re flawed. They’re all flawed. Their aren’t complete. And along comes Supergirl… and it’s Supergirl! And she’s got all the powers. And also, she’s kind of a couple steps above them. And I love having that character around. I will really fight to keep her in the book.”
Now I’ve already read many comments on this news about it being a gimmick and having an all-female cast just for the sake of doing it is ridiculous. While all of these things can be true at the end of the day the writing will speak for itself. The book could have been intended as a way to pander to the masses (which could or could not be true) but that doesn’t really matter if it’s good. We’ll have to wait and see on this one.
