Xbox lead Phil Spencer recently spoke with IGN about the recent price cut in Japan on the PlayStation 4. He is very confident that this reduction will make it’s to other markets and feels his company is ready for it.
“I fully expect they [PlayStation] will drop price. When I think about the playbook they’ve used in the past, we feel good about the plans we have in place going forward in the holiday. If history tells, then we’ll see a price drop from them coming.”
While price drops are simple for the consumer they can be quite a delicate game of chess for Microsoft and Sony. Drop your price too late and you’re giving sales to the competition that already did. However, drop your price too early and you’ve just wasted money. Both Microsoft and Sony play a balancing game trying to drop their prices around the same time as their competition.
It’s safe to assume the price reduction of the PlayStation 4 in Japan (which works out to about $50 cheaper than current pricing) will makes its way to the western world. The real question is when of course. It’s a safe bet to assume the upcoming holiday season.
