The Inhumans Coming To Television

There have been a bunch of you out there that have been waiting to see if an Inhumans movie was going to happen. Well, you will have to take this as more of a good news – bad news sort of thing. It was originally slated as a film to come out in 2018, but after the Spider-Man rights were secured by Marvel, as well as adding an Ant-Man and The Wasp sequel to their slate, it seems that Inhumans were places on the chopping black.

On Monday, Marvel Television, Disney/ABC Television Group and IMAX announced that they will team up and drop a new television series based on the aforementioned property. Collider is reporting that the first two episodes of the series, which is slated to drop in September of 2017, will be filmed entirely in IMAX and released in theaters before it comes to television. This will mark the first time that IMAX has co-financed a TV series. According to the press release, the series “will explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family.”

“This unprecedented alliance represents a bold, innovative approach to launching great TV content for a worldwide audience,” said Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney|ABC Television Group. “It highlights Disney|ABC’s unrelenting commitment to finding new and creative ways to showcasing our very best programming and increasing global engagement and reach.”

“This first-of-its-kind multi-platform production, distribution and marketing agreement brings together Marvel Television’s unique brand of entertainment, ABC’s unparalleled audience and IMAX’s brand and global fanboy demographic,” said IMAX CEO, Rich Gelfond. “It also takes our decades-long relationship with The Walt Disney Company to a whole new level, jointly breaking new ground in the industry. We are confident our exhibition partners will be excited to work with us on this innovative launch of a series across the IMAX network.”

It is an interesting turn of events for Marvel to decide to move a property from film to television. Although, given how many characters inhabit that universe, a television series may be best to explore and keep a rotating cast of different characters. As we have seen a few of them inhabit the Agents of SHIELD universe, it will be curious to see how both show, if they will, interact with each other.
